The original Morgan Stanley that was formed by J.P. Morgan & Co. partners Harold Stanley, Henry Sturgis, and others came into existence on the 16th of September 1935.

In response to the Glass-Steagall Act that required separating both commercial and investment banking businesses.

In its first year, Morgan Stanley Bank operated with a 24 percent market share which is US$1.1 billion in private placements and public offerings.

Now the recent Morgan Stanley Bank is the outcome of the merger of the main Morgan Stanley with Dean Witter Discover and Co. in the year 1997.
